Title : Evaluating a nested high-resolution weather model, Harmonie.

Project Lead : Sean Delaney From : Irish Centre for High End Computing (None)

Dates : from 2013-08-12 00:00:00 to 2013-08-12 00:00:00

Description :

Motivation and objectives :
At ICHEC, we are evaluating a 0.5km grid "mesoscale" weather model, Harmonie, nested within a larger 2.5km Harmonie model. These in turn coupled with ocean models to study a coastal domain, (ROMS, DIVAST), specifically Galway Bay in Ireland. We plan to visualise the output of Harmonie and ROMS, DIVAST in this geographic context and compare to observational data.

Teams :
In the context of this project, it is this area and the groups of Alastair McKinstry and of Dr. Enda O'Brien that this project supports. The research is also in collaboration with the national weather forecasting agency, MET Eireann and the wider European, HIRLAM group. The end results of this work will be feed back into HIRLAM improving the science behind the operational forecasting of eleven Northern European countries who use the Harmonie model.

Recordings & Results :
The scientific challenges are to convert the multiple datasets from the models and observations, which are on different non-cartesian grids, etc. to a common reference frame and then compare them. We know that weather models need 'scale-selective damping' at the grid scale to prevent energy buildup at sub-grid scale levels. These need to be examined. Previous efforts of using Harmonie at these scales have led to convective events being "too symmetrical" and "unrealistic". Hence we need to explore convective events in both the datasets from LIDAR and models. For the ocean model testing, we need to visualise the 3-D wind and ocean currents simultaneously, and compare with the observation sets from radar of the (2-D) surface wave and current fields.

Conclusions :
