TNA project : A dynamic visual conceptual model for human-robot interaction for high risks high stakes scenarios.

Acronym : 6-A dynamic visual conceptual model for human-robot interaction for high risks high stakes scenarios.-Wachs

Project Lead : Juan Wachs From : Purdue University

Dates : from 5th June 2013 to 13th June 2013

Description :

Motivation and objectives :
Our research team is currently developing robotic technologies to assists surgeons in the operating room, through complementing activities often done by the surgical-techs. While the first prototype of such robotic system was developed by us already, there is a need for additional tools to validate and visualize the processes, by showing objects and interactions of such a robotic system before it is implemented in the operating room. We look forward to learning and implementing these tools, such as Vivid OPM, developed by Technion ESML Lab in our system and also establish a long term relationship with the ESML Lab at the Technion.

Teams :
Organization short description The ISAT lab is a collaborative laboratory between the School of Industrial Engineering and the School of Technology, Computer Information. The ISAT lab is located within the Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, West Lafayette, USA. The School of Industrial Engineering is ranked among the 10 top departments in the US and its high prestige is acknowledged worldwide. Proposing group The team consists of Dr. Juan Wachs, the director of the ISAT Lab, and Dr. Vanessa Evers (Human Media Interaction Group), from University of Twente. Scientific background All of them hold a master’s degree in their respective area of expertise, and Wachs and Evers hold a PhD.

Recordings & Results :
The impact of this visit is hugh. With the help of the visual conceptual models it is possible to identify what components of the interaction in the OR can be automated using cybernetics. This is the basic step to introduce robots to the OR, and it is the factual support for systems. The correct implementation of this robotic system can have direct positive outcomes by reducing the number of surgical complications due to miscommunications.

Conclusions :
Overall this was a very unique experience and I am very satisfied with it. I look forward for more of this type of projects!". Later in he added "I wanted to express my gratitude for making my stay at the Technion and at the lab so enjoyable. On the professional level, I enjoyed interacting with all of you, and being aware of fruitful discussions, opinions and directions coming from the faculty and the students. I was impressed how in such a limited time, almost a full conceptual model of the OR interactions were modeled in such a high level of detail. On the personal level, I was surprised to see how friendly, kind and generous all of you were with me.
