Title : Enhanced 4D historical visualization

Project Lead : florent laroche From : Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France)

Description :

Motivation and objectives :
Over the last centuries, 3D models of cities have been created all over Europe. Some of the oldest ones such as the Plans reliefs (collection started in 1668 by Louis XIV, King of France) were exclusively dedicated to military operations. More recent ones (early 20st century), were realized with cultural heritage and urbanism purposes. Over the last decade, some of these mock-ups have been digitalized and virtual 3D models have been created (Langweil, 2008; Chevrier et al., 2010). Very few of them are going beyond visualization; they are only textured geometric models without any other kind of associated knowledge or information. Recently, two projects aim at developing enriched 3D historical models; Nantes 1900 (Laroche et al. 2006, Laroche et al., 2008) representing the city of Nantes, France, in 1900 and Virtual Leodium (Billen et al. 2009) representing the city of Lige, Belgium, in 1730. The objective of the mission is to work on the new scientific concept called Enhanced 4D historical model, more specifically how to display the information from the knowledge database into an immersive 3D room.

Teams :
Nantes and Liege teams are both working on mock-ups realised in the early 20th century. They share the same goal; creating participatory and evolutionary historical knowledge models, built on a 3D virtual copy of original mock-ups. There work are related to archaeological and heritage engineering more speciicaly on spatio-temporal model and architectural design model. The main objective of the group is to semantically enrich 3D models with historical urban knowledge and work on the display of this information in a 4D interactive device.

Recordings & Results :
The objective of the mission is to work on the new scientific concept called Enhanced 4D historical model, more specifically how to display the information from the knowledge database into an immersive 3D room.

Conclusions :
We have produced a new data structuration model based on a comparison between Nantes and Liege knowledge databases. Next step is to visualize this Enhanced 4D historical model in a Virtual Reality Cave.
