Description :

Motivation and objectives :
WebRTC is all about Real Time Communication. It is the ability to communicate live, exchanging audio, video, and data with others (primarily, but not exclusively, with remote human partners) as if they were right there next to you. WebRTC technology enables and drives our communities to use interoperable, open standard based, high quality, enhanced Real Time Communication (voice, video, data), and collaboration tools and services, that are affordable (inexpensive for the users) and provide easily exploitable communication means a for the widest range of the potential user communities. The main motivation is to gather and gain experiences in the use of WebRTC technology with ultra high resolution media streams. Studying a normal Web Browser WebRTC media coder and capture engine compatibility with the 2k, 4K video environment.

Teams :
NIIF Institute Voice Video Collaboration department has been developing and providing VoIP(since 2000) and Videoconference(Since 2003) and Video Archive service(VoD=>Videotorium since 2004) to the entire Hungarian academic and higher and secondary education, research and public collection community

Recordings & Results :
WebRTC is an open technology, and also it is a game changer, very disruptive technology. It has opened and created a new ecosystem and market of WebRTC capable devices. WebRTC as a secure encrypted but easy to use trustable transparent open standard based communication is appreciated more and more. High Definition and beyond (UltraHigh Definition, 2K, 4K) video is a requirement for many application in Research & Higher Education, furthermore 4K equipments (televisions, cameras, etc.) prices are going down nowadays, and 4K will be getting more and more closer to consumer electronic. Putting together 4K and WebRTC technologies seems to be the future of that we call today Telepresence.

Conclusions :
We successfully captured UHD input from a capable capture card and made successful loopback tests and a successful point-to-point call using UHD video input on a Windows 7 operating system. The barriers and limits in Web browsers WebRTC media support are recognized. We made progress on Linux operating system with a Blackmagic Decklink capture card 4K support. We worked with gStreamer developers and requested modification in the source code of Decklink plugin in order to handle 4K support. We successfully tested and captured UHD input video stream from the Decklink capture card using gStreamers new modified source code. It is an important step forward because Ericssons research OpenWebRTC stack media handling is based on gStreamer, so this way it could benefit form this development and utilize this 4K video capture input.
