Description :

Motivation and objectives :
Motivation: We're planning to build the new laboratory of the Visualization and Virtual reality (VaVR). VaVR lab will be unique system for multimedia presentations, virtual teaching (anatomy, virtual surgery, manufacturing processes, mechanics of planets etc.), simulations and training (traffic management, flood simulations, pollution and fire spread simulations etc.), visualization of scientific simulations (crash tests, aerodynamic simulations, molecular dynamic simulations etc.), presentations of products of partners and customers of IT4Innovations and for prototyping. VaVR lab will be divided into two parts. 3D cinema with 6m x 2,3m screen and 3D immersive virtual reality CAVE with dimensions 3m x 3m x 2,3m (w x d x h). CAVE will have four 3D projection screens with rear projection (left, right and front wall plus floor). Since floor will have rear projection as well, it will be raised above existing floor and access to the CAVE will be through stairs. Each CAVE screen will be made from panels with special optical properties and picture will be projected by sets of projectors to achieve high resolution of the picture. Requirement is that minimal resolution will be 3500 x 3500 x 2600 pixels. CAVE will create immersive environment for user. This will be achieved by stereoscopic projection and special googles. For 3D cinema pair of projectors with high resolution will be used. Both CAVE and 3D cinema will be equipped with audio-visual technique. Picture for both systems will be generated by cluster of work stations placed in IT4Innovations data center. Both audio-visual systems i.e. CAVE and 3D cinema will be able to display same content or work independently and display different content. Mode when same content will be displayed by both, CAVE and 3D cinema will be useful mainly for presentation to larger groups of users or students. In this mode they can for example observe virtual surgery performed in CAVE on 3D screen. Objectives: We want to get experience with the solution in established visualization centers. We would like to create a workflow of the new knowledge based on the open source tools.

Teams :
Supercomputing for Industry: Our work is based on successful research conducted at Department of Applied Mathematics at VSB TU Ostrava in the area of scalable numerical algorithms. Together with Department of Mechanics and Department of Mechanics of Materials, these novel algorithms have been effectively used to solve challenging engineering problems. We have also the advantage of long-term collaboration with renowned domestic and international research centers, and industrial partners.

Recordings & Results :
This project will enable the proposer, VaVR at IT4Innovations to use and develop on new visualization techniques involving COVISE/OpenCOVER. Furthermore this environment will enable the researchers at VaVR using high quality immersive virtual reality environments to analyze their datasets and results of large simulations computed on local supercomputer. Using open source environment will allow the proposer to add new features requested by scientists and costumers.

Conclusions :
The user learned to work (to develop new plugins) with the open-source application COVISE/OpenCOVER during his visit at the host. These applications are the basis for creating an own workflow from loading of a data set and data processing to their visualization. The user was introduced to basic and advanced programming in using COVISE and the underlaying OpenSceneGraph Library that already supports many base functionality for VaVR laboratories. The user also learned to work with ART system to tracking movement which is supported by OpenCOVER system. He plans to adapt all collected information to his work and the needs of IT4Innovations.
