Title : Development of an interaction techniques testing environment for Internet of Things Applications

Project Lead : Mario Lorenz From : Technische Universitt Chemnitz (None)

Dates : from -- to 2014-02-04 11:41:57

Description :

Motivation and objectives :
The Factory of the Future (FoF) will be an industrial Internet of Things (IoT) with many different smart devices connected internally and externally via internet. Especially because of the higher number of devices and the enormous amount of available information and interaction possibilities, it is necessary to develop and install easy to use devices. Those devices have to provide the relevant information for a certain application at a specific time for a unique user. In addition interaction applications have to be intuitive and trustworthy. The objective of this project is to develop a virtual environment for testing various interaction techniques with different users in order to derive conclusions on the usability of devices and methods for the factories of the future. Most importantly the trust level from the users will be examined for different methods. The development work will also include the incorporation of low-cost interaction devices such as Wii balance board and Microsoft Kinect.

Teams :
The Laboratory Virtual Reality Center Production Engineering (VRCP) operated by the Professorship for Machine Tools and Forming Technology regards itself as: interdisciplinary communication platform for research, industry and education center for development and application of VR technologies focusing on mechanical engineering and production technology from product and process design up to factory planning innovation center Virtual Reality in Saxony With the VRCP the Professorship is a technology and competence partner for companies for applied research projects. The competences include the development of problem specific software solutions, prototypical realization in case of new developments and advisory services for the installation and configuration of innovative VR systems. The VRCP is used by the divisions Virtual Product Development and Process Informatics.

Recordings & Results :
An immersive environment capable of testing usability and trust levels of interaction techniques (including different interaction devices) was developed. Further the developed environment had to be compatible with the different interaction methods and devices. These led to a setup for an evaluation environment where conclusions on usability and trust levels can be derived.

Conclusions :
The Powerwall and MR evaluation environments with both navigations methods were created and the user evaluations could be executed.
